Beth will sit alongside Susanna Eastburn MBE, our current Chair, who moves to the position of Co-Chair alongside Beth. This appointment marks a significant moment in OFA's journey as Beth brings with her a unique blend of experience, passion, and connection to the organisation's mission.

Beth White: A Remarkable Journey with Orchestras for All

Having joined the charity as a cornet player from Peterlee in County Durham back in 2013, Beth’s journey with Orchestras for All is nothing short of inspiring. She is not only a current Trustee but also a previous participant of one of the charity’s programmes, the National Orchestra for All (NOFA), and Founding Co-Chair of OFA’s Youth Board 2020-2022. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of music.

The Power of Youth on Charity Boards

OFA’s Board of Trustees are a group of 12 volunteers who ensure we carry out our mission, use our funding and resources wisely, ensure we are accountable and comply with our governing document and the law.

It’s our belief that Boards whose trustees have different backgrounds and experience are more likely to encourage debate and to make better decisions as a result.

As a charity working with young people, Young Trustees bring fresh perspectives, energy, and a deep understanding of current issues. However, when less than 3% of charity trustees are under 30, charities are in desperate need of young people’s perspectives. This engagement of young people, alumni of OFA’s programmes, not only helps in better understanding the needs of the community but also paves the way for more effective and relevant decision-making and strategic planning.

According to a study conducted by the Charity Commission, organisations with younger Trustees tend to be more innovative, adaptable, and in tune with the needs and expectations of younger beneficiaries.

Beth’s appointment as Co-Chair is a clear signal of OFA's dedication to promoting the involvement of young people in the decision-making processes. She brings her unique perspective as a previous member of the NOFA programme, having experienced firsthand the transformative power of music and the impact it can have on the lives of young people.

She Founded OFA’s very first Youth Board 2020 – 2022 at a vital moment for young people’s perspectives to be heard throughout the pandemic. Her leadership oversaw the Youth Board rebranding the charity, becoming more invested in artistic and programme decision making alongside creating the Youth Board slogan: nothing about us, without us.

Susanna Eastburn, Co-Chair shared: “I am so looking forward to working as Co-Chair with Beth, who has been a wonderful and committed Trustee and brilliant advocate for our work. Co-Chairing is a new experience for me and I appreciate being able to draw on Beth’s insights from her previous role as Co-Chair of the Youth Board. Putting youth leadership at the top and front of the organisation is what we’re all about, so this is a vital step for us to be taking.”

At Orchestras for All (OFA), we believe that youth leadership holds the potential to transform the future of orchestral music.

By encouraging young people to take on leadership roles – such as becoming an Ambassador, joining a Youth Board or providing support to an ensemble as a Young Leader, youth orchestras can benefit from fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and remain connected to modern trends.

What’s more, youth leadership can help to foster an inclusive musical community that keeps young people engaged (just like in National Orchestra for All!) as well as boost a young person’s wellbeing and social skills.

With social media platforms like TikTok making it easier than ever to share knowledge and hold live debates, young people can often be more attuned to current issues surrounding diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

We find that regularly involving young leaders in areas such as programming and key decision-making leads to greater representation of different backgrounds and demographics, contributing to a much more vibrant and inclusive culture. This cultural richness will not only enhances your orchestra and its reach, it will make your ensemble more representative of our society as a whole.

Taking on roles within orchestral management – from organising events and fundraising, to marketing and artistic planning – enables a young people to improve vital skills such as teamwork and time management as well as improving their ability to organise and communicate with others – benefitting them both personally and professionally, in any career path they choose to follow in future.

There’s no doubt that young leaders can act as inspiring role models for their peers – and at OFA, we see this happen every day! Strengthening relationships and fostering a supportive and collaborative environment within a youth orchestra creates a positive cycle of learning, where knowledge and skills are shared more freely among members.

Many of our Ambassadors or alumni of the Modulo Programme and National Orchestra for All choose to take on wellbeing roles, or offer their support in different instrumental sections by rehearsing and performing with the ensembles during live activity.

5. Building confidence and self-esteem

Youth leadership opportunities are incredibly important as they also give young people the chance to take ownership over their experiences, which creates an empowering learning environment in which they can build their confidence and self-esteem.

Playing in an orchestra often requires you to spend a lot of time following directions from your conductor (we’re looking at you, Emma and Rocco!) as well as the instructions written on your sheet music. In a traditional ensemble, there are few scenarios where a young musician would have full control over what they are doing, so why not offer them the opportunity through youth leadership?

6. Boosting social awareness

Increasingly, we’re seeing young people become the champions of social issues and drivers of widespread change (think the Kanneh-Masons, Greta Thunberg and Lewis Capaldi, among many others), with social media being used as an effective tool to help spread important messages and reach young audiences.

Youth leadership positions in orchestras also gives young people a platform to raise awareness about the topics they care most about – from climate change and mental health, to social justice and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community – using the power of music to spark conversations with others and create a positive ripple effect.

‘I have social anxiety and didn’t think I was up to meeting new people – but National Orchestra for All is like a giant family,’ says young violinist

“In NOFA, it really doesn’t matter if you live with a disability – you can still play music.”

Meet Tianci. The first violinist enjoyed a quick tea break with us at Westminster School during National Orchestra for All’s recent winter session – the first in-person rehearsal for the ensemble in almost two years, owing to the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here the Grade 8 musician tells us her moving story and shares words of wisdom with other young people who may be struggling…

What inspired you to pick up the violin?

I play the violin because you can do many things with a violin. You can pluck it, you can play bow on it, you can do a tremolo. If you picked guitar, I think you could only pluck it! I think if you tried to bow on it, it wouldn’t really work. But I mean, there is the viola and the cello and the double bass but I think the violin has the most – and it’s easy to carry.

You could say the same for the viola but I’m kinda used to the strings of B, D, A and E, rather than C. I mean it would work because they’re still in fifths, if you’re trying to play a scale but I think I’m more interested and open to violin.

What music are you enjoying playing at the moment?

The [NOFA] piece where it involves pizzicato – my mum printed the score for me and I practiced it before I came here today [to the NOFA Winter Session]. It’s one of the old pieces, starts with an S… ‘Spoitoresa’!

How does it feel to be part of NOFA?

It feels good, it feels kind of like a giant family. Not to make it like weird but you know. It feels like everyone is your friend.

Has Orchestras for All helped to break down barriers to music-making for you?

Before I joined the orchestra, I think because I’m not really social and because I have social anxiety, I thought I wasn’t really up to meeting new people. But how I described it earlier, it’s like a giant family. I feel like I won’t be scared, I’ll be proud because I did go through all the playing. Everyone’s nice here, we’re all open. In my previous experiences at school, I got bullied but nobody bullies here. Everyone is really nice here.

You know Lucy [Hale]? We all value her, we all miss her – she kind of connected all of us in a way. That made us all like each other and be friends with everyone. Even like adult to adult, adult to child, child to child. It doesn’t matter what age, she joined all of us in a way. She still lives inside all of us.

Here it doesn’t matter if you’re disabled because you can still play music. You can be in a wheelchair and still play the trumpet or the clarinet. You could be in a wheelchair and play the violin. You could have a stammer and still play the violin. ‘Cos like music is like a new language. It’s a language we can all communicate by – the playing of music, if you know what I mean?

Where do you picture yourself in 10 years’ time?

Now I do some conducting and some pieces for an orchestra. It’s around where I live in Richmond. I conduct in the orchestra and imagine one day being like a giant conductor or a lead violinist, ya know?

Like when we went to Leeds, there was a lead violinist who was really confident and I thought I just want to be like him. I think his name was Isaac or something, I’m not too sure. But yeah, I just want to be like a main violinist one day, enjoying my time.

If you could share a message with other young people who are considering joining an orchestra, what would it be?

I would probably say don’t be scared what other people think because their thoughts don’t matter. Their thoughts don’t matter to you. It’s your goal and if you just continue playing, you’re gonna get your goal.

There were loads of opinions about me before – I didn’t take it to person and now I’m still playing violin, Grade 8. That’s my main message I would say – don’t give up no matter what anyone else says.

Watch young musicians’ plea as they urge public to break down barriers to music making

As Orchestras for All launches its spring season with a vibrant new visual identity, young musicians highlight why breaking down barriers to music making is more important than ever.

Earlier today, special guests and a team of young musicians joined Orchestras for All on Zoom for a moment of musical solidarity as we celebrate the launch of our ambitious five-year strategy.

To mark the occasion, we’re proud to unveil a bold new visual identity – designed in collaboration with our recently recruited youth board.

Although we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far – all made possible by the ongoing support of our loyal partners and donors – we understand that there is still much work to be done and especially now during the coronavirus pandemic.

Following 10 years of breaking down barriers, we share a renewed vision: a country where all young people aged 11-19 can access the joy and benefits of playing music with others, regardless of the daily challenges they may face.

With our exciting line-up of inclusive music making opportunities, we’re ready to redefine what an orchestra is, who it is for and the positive impact it can have, while also empowering young people and energising music educators to lead change in their schools or local communities.

As part of this, Orchestras for All’s new programme includes a special season of work for National Orchestra for All (the UK’s only completely inclusive national youth orchestra), titled ‘The Way We See It’ – a musical portrayal of equality, diversity and inclusion and with youth voice at its core.

For a worrying 98 per cent of National Orchestra for All (NOFA) members, cultural barriers and limited access to music making have prevented them from doing what they love the most.

Urging others to support orchestral music making (see video above), NOFA clarinetist, Joe, said: “Coming from a working class background, classical music seemed so inaccessible. It just seemed like something for the rich and wealthy. You could learn but weren’t given the opportunity to unless you had the money.”

Many of our young musicians also face health barriers, with 55 per cent previously unable to play in an orchestra due to autism, a physical disability, learning difficulty, or social, emotional or behavioural difficulties.

But when young musicians join the National Orchestra for All, they leave their worries and responsibilities at the door. Violinist, NOFA ambassador and young carer, Isaac, said: “Being a NOFA member gave me some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. You play great music, you meet amazing people – and there’s a tonne of support, so that any problems that you have can be dealt with.”

Current NOFA member and viola player, Hannah, added: “It means a lot to me because I was able to gain my confidence and speak to new people. It encouraged me to share my ideas.”

And despite only 1.6 per cent of Black, Asian and ethnically diverse musicians being members of British orchestras, NOFA is now the most diverse orchestra in the UK with 37 per cent of players coming from underrepresented groups and 54 per cent also based in the lowest 3 IDACI multiple deprivation deciles.

Through a combination of our three core programmes – NOFA, Modulo (supporting teachers and schools to develop an ensemble) and Music Leadership Training (boosting the skills of music leaders and educators) – Orchestras for All is fully committed to enacting positive change over the next five years.

Thanks to our Modulo Programme, we’re pleased to share that 710 young people will have the opportunity to perform in their school in 2021 as well as attending regional and national activities, with 47 secondary schools taking part nationwide.

While the effects of the coronavirus pandemic may be ongoing, we can’t – and won’t – let that be another barrier to music making.

‘Coming from a working class family, classical music seemed so inaccessible’, says teenage clarinetist

Based in north London, 19-year-old English Literature student and clarinetist, Joe, first joined the National Orchestra for All (NOFA) in 2014. Years on he supports the group as an Ambassador, so we caught up with him to find out more about his life and musical journey…

Tell us what music means to you.

Music has always been central to my life. We had to learn an instrument in Year 4 [at school], which for me was the clarinet. I’ve kept it up ever since and also did music for GCSE. For me, music is a creative outlet – I do love those creative outlets, which is why I’m studying English Literature! 

I love expressing my emotions in a way that other people can enjoy them as much as me, whether that’s through music, art or writing.

What’s been keeping you busy in lockdown?

I’ve mostly been in class – studying English Lit is pretty heavy! I’ve been reading Sabrina by Nick Drnaso, which is a really great graphic novel and there’s a whole bunch of poetry too. We’ve adapted well [during the pandemic] – the university’s got a good system going and the union is working the hardest they can, so it works.

This might sound a bit odd but I’m also a professional conker player. I picked it up in lockdown when the conkers fell and started practising. So yeah, I’m good with a conker!

Who inspired you to pick up the clarinet?

To be honest it wasn’t really inspiration, it was more the instrument we were handed in Year 4 and told ‘this is what you’re going to play now’! I learned the basics and got to Grade 1 standard of playing by the end of Year 6. When I went to secondary school they didn’t have a clarinet, but I picked it up again in Year 8 and have had it ever since. 

It’s a very relaxing instrument because it forces you to focus on your breathing, so you get into a rhythm and that really calms you down when you’re taking big breaths or holding [a note]. The clarinet is also a soft-sounding instrument (although it can be noisy when it wants to be!). 

On the whole it’s an instrument that takes the back melodies – not many pieces are written for the clarinet, so when you play them they tend to be calm. 

Describe what music you enjoy listening to the most.

I’m a huge fan of Florence and the Machine – I just love her music, it’s so great! I think I pretty much know every song now. Similarly with Amy Winehouse and Elbow. They’re my mainstays but I also listen to the radio quite a lot (I’m old-fashioned like that), so pick up songs I like from there too. And I love Celeste’s music.

A lot of [Amy and Celeste’s] music touches on issues that I grew up around, so it resonates with me in a big way. But the songs also have gravity and weight in ways that other songs don’t. They usually have a heavy beat, a low line and as for the lyrics themselves, you don’t necessarily have to listen to the words to get the meaning – and sometimes that’s really powerful.

Has Orchestras for All impacted your life and musical journey?

The National Orchestra for All (NOFA) has been such a help; it advanced my musical skills grade upon grade, year after year and the [team] are always willing to help you learn. It also massively widened my classical music range – I now have a classical playlist that’s like 300 pieces long! 

It’s given me a real appreciation for other art and music and I’m really thankful that I was given the chance to learn and to improve. I’ve met so many nice people that I still contact today.

Why is playing in a youth orchestra so special? 

You don’t really find that togetherness anywhere else. You can go out to university clubs, but there’s only so many people there. Orchestras represent a unique harmony, if you like – they’re organic and [in NOFA] you get 100 young people coming together in a uniform way, it’s so great! It’s inspirational because you just don’t see it anywhere else.

What’s your advice to other young musicians who are considering joining an orchestra?

Absolutely go for it! Try your hardest – if you’ve tried your best, no-one will ever fault you because you’ve still contributed in some way to the harmony of that orchestra. You’ll definitely take away something more from it – you’re never not learning.

Orchestras for All is…

Amazement! Coming from a working class background, classical music seemed so inaccessible. It just seemed like something for the rich and wealthy – you could learn but weren’t given the opportunity unless you had the money. 

If you break down those barriers, more people can have an appreciation for it. And it’s history! If you section off that part of music, you lose something forever. The more you break down those barriers, the more people can remember [the music] – and that’s really important.

Welcome to our new Trustees - NOFA alumni Beth and Joelle!

Orchestras for All believes in the power and importance of young people’s voices. We know that young people have great ideas and important opinions to share about decisions that affect them. Our ambition is to ensure their voices lead the organisation forward, supercharging its future.

National Orchestra for All members already co-create new music that enables their collective voice to be heard throughout NOFA performances, both in style and content. We also have Young Leaders (members aged 16 - 18) and Ambassadors (alumni aged 18 - 20) who take on leadership roles across the year, offering fresh insights and perspectives to lead, motivate, inspire, champion and develop our work and practice.

Now, as the next step in this vital area, we’re excited to announce the appointment of our first Trustees recruited from NOFA alumni: Beth White and Joelle Sogunro.

Beth and Joelle will join our eight existing Trustees, supporting crucial discussions in the lead-up to the launch of a new five-year strategy in Spring 2021 that will continue our mission to break down barriers young people face to music making.

Having been part of Orchestras for All programmes in recent years, Joelle and Beth will bring their own unique experiences to the conversation.

Over the coming year, we will be exploring the next evolution of our youth voice strategy, bringing together voices from our Modulo schools with those of National Orchestra for All members past and present in a Youth Advisory Board, chaired by Joelle and Beth.

We’re so excited for a future that integrates youth voice into all conversations; a future that provides a different insight, perspective and representation of our young people, that brings fresh perspectives and challenges our thinking, and which builds a network of advocates for the future.

Or, to think of it another way (and to paraphrase from the inspirational work of Contact, Manchester): If Orchestras for All was a stick of rock, wherever you break it you’d find young people leading - it’s at the core of everything we do.

Meet Beth

"Being a music production student and trumpet player from Durham, I didn’t have access to any orchestral opportunities growing up - until Orchestras for All was founded. I played within OFA programmes for seven years and in recent years have undertaken volunteer roles. With experience in both classical and popular music, I’ve played in numerous notable venues and with numerous artists, such as Dave Stewart from Eurythmics. These are opportunities that I likely wouldn’t have been able to access without the confidence OFA has instilled in me.

My individual love for music has now developed into a love for sharing music, and giving young musicians the help that I was given, in order to give everyone a fair chance. Music has a strong power that can make us feel every emotion, and it’s this magic that keeps us coming back."

Meet Joelle

"Hello! I am Joelle and have been a part of Orchestras for All since 2016 as a National Orchestra for All member, then as an Ambassador, and now as a Trustee!

I started off in the NOFA trumpet section, but in 2017 started learning the cello aged 17, and so joined the string section for my final year despite being a complete beginner. One of the awesome things about NOFA is that it welcomes players of all abilities to join, and so coming to NOFA every year alone was a huge motivation for me to continue with music at all, especially as I am currently studying a STEM subject at university.

Being a part of NOFA has opened up many opportunities for me, including helping me to join a brass band and several orchestras over the years, so now I would really like to take this opportunity to give back to the charity as a Trustee, and do what I can to help OFA grow. I look forward to working with OFA over the coming year and seeing the impact we have on young people close-up, especially during these trying times."
